- The so-called commercial grade modems offer even more than that; they also
- offer features such as watchdog timers, remote configuration, password
- security, and other features that make one's life easier if you have to
- manage a large number of modems in a dial-up pool. They also offer a more
- flexible and comprehensive set of registers and commands that allow you to
- address specific needs when configuring the modem. I've also seen some of
- these modems that allow you to configure the modem via controls and
- displays on the front panel (such as the Motorola Codex and V.3400 models).
-
- And of course, all of this goes without mentioning the various rack-mount
- systems available.
-
- As you said, it's all about features; the commercial grade modems offer
- features that make the modem more configurable, easier to manage in large
- numbers, and features that enhance overall reliability (such as failsafe
- timers and resets) - all of which, of course, add to the cost.
